Differences between Frequency Converters and Variable Frequency Power Supplies

1. Working Principles

A frequency converter is an AC electronic device that converts DC power into AC power with adjustable frequency and voltage. It adopts MOSFETs (Metal-Oxide-Semiconductor Field-Effect Transistors) or IGBTs (Insulated Gate Bipolar Transistors) to regulate output voltage and frequency, thereby adjusting the speed and load of motors. A variable frequency power supply is power equipment that supplies adjustable AC power. Unlike frequency converters, it generally does not feature motor control functions. Its operating principle focuses on delivering AC power with adjustable output frequency and voltage to satisfy the special requirements of laboratory instruments, communication equipment, test benches and other devices. Variable frequency power supplies mainly provide adjustable current and power frequency instead of driving loads.

Such equipment needs adjustable voltage and frequency to match the operating requirements of different devices, without the function of controlling motor speed and load.

3. Functions and Control Performance

Frequency converters are equipped with sophisticated control functions to adjust motor speed, torque and operating modes. They support precise acceleration, deceleration and reverse rotation, as well as multiple protection mechanisms to guarantee the safe operation of electrical equipment.

Variable frequency power supplies are mainly designed to output adjustable current and frequency without motor control capabilities. They generally feature stable power output and overload protection to ensure system reliability and safety.

4. Operation and Maintenance Complexity

Frequency converters are relatively complex. Operators need professional knowledge for installation, configuration and maintenance related to motor control and speed regulation. They are usually directly connected to motors and require customized programming and parameter setting.

Variable frequency power supplies are easier to install and operate. They are mostly connected to testing and laboratory equipment with relatively simple hardware structures.
